Mississippi in the Park Returns to Atlanta Atlanta, GA, March 30, 2017 /Mississippi Society of Georgia/ -- This year marks the bicentennial of Mississippi’s statehood, and Atlanta’s Mississippi Society of Georgia is bringing back the picnic in the park to celebrate it! Invitations are being issued to ALL Mississippians, wherever they may reside, to gather at the tree-shaded Chastain Park in Buckhead on Saturday, June 10 from 10:30 am to 3 pm for a great day - rain or shine. Set as an old-fashioned reunion and picnic, the theme is always “Catfish and the Blues” but this year, we will add “Celebrating 200 Years of Mississippi” to that theme. Come early, spread your blanket, and soak up the sounds of live music provided by The Shuffluejunkies while savoring chicken, fried fresh-water catfish and all the fixin’s brought over and cooked up by Penn’s of Mississippi! Wash it down with complimentary McAlister’s famous sweet tea and the mouthwatering Sugaree’s Bakery caramel cake! The event also includes booths and representatives from the colleges and universities of Mississippi to provide a gathering spot for alums and information for potential students and families. Friday night, June 9, we will have Mississippi night at the Atlanta Braves as the Braves take on the New York Mets in the Braves’ brand new SunTrust Park. We will have a group of tickets available for purchase on our website for our section. All tickets purchased through our website will include a collectable Braves mini-bat. All proceeds from Mississippi in the Park fund a scholarship that assists a Georgia high school graduate accepted by a Mississippi college/university. A $1,000 scholarship for the 2017-2018 school year will be awarded to this year’s recipient at the picnic. This will mark the 7th consecutive year that the society has awarded this scholarship. Admittance to the picnic is free, but be sure to pre-register before June 1, 2017 for discounted catfish dinners and t-shirts! Only a limited number will be available after that date and at the event. For more detailed information about the picnic and other weekend events, please check our website, www.mssocietyofga.org. See y’all there!
